Abderrahim Oulhaj is a Professor of Biostatistics and Epidemiology in the Department of Public Health and Epidemiology at Khalifa University. With over 28 years of experience in academia and research, he holds a PhD in Statistics from UCL University in Belgium (2003). Previously, he served as an Associate Professor of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) for eight years, where he directed the PhD program in Public Health. Before joining UAEU, he spent nearly a decade as a senior statistician at the University of Oxford, leading several high-profile projects, including the Oxford Project to Investigate Memory and Ageing (OPTIMA) and the EXenatide Study of Cardiovascular Event Lowering (EXSCEL).
Prof. Oulhaj has been a member of numerous national and international research committees and currently serves on the steering committee of the POCCardio project, a major European Union-funded clinical trial on cardiovascular diseases (https://www.poccardio-project.eu/). He is also a project lead within the European Society of Cardiology's Cardiovascular Risk Collaboration Unit. In the UAE, he has contributed to various national committees, including those for therapeutic and clinical trials, epidemiology, diagnostics, and data safety and monitoring. He played a key role in developing two national guidelines for cardiovascular disease prevention in collaboration with the Department of Health.
At Khalifa University, Prof. Oulhaj directs the KU-SEHA Clinical Research Certificate Program, providing clinical research training to over 150 medical doctors, residents and fellows across public hospitals and clinics in Abu Dhabi. He has received multiple awards from UAE University and Khalifa University for his excellence in research, recognized through publications in leading peer-reviewed scientific journals. Additionally, he holds three international patents and copyrights in the fields of Alzheimer’s disease and cardiovascular diseases.
His research interests span statistical modeling in infectious and chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, COPD, and COVID-19. He is particularly focused on advanced survival analysis, risk prediction modeling, longitudinal data analysis, artificial intelligence in healthcare, machine and deep learning, and joint modeling of repeated measures and time-to-event data.
