Solar Decathlon Middle East 2021 Competition ( SDME 2021)
Solar Decathlon is the most important sustainable housing competition in the world started in 2002 in the United States of America. It is an international competition for university students to design, build and operate sustainable solar-powered houses. It’s an intensive learning experience for participants and homeowners as they experience the latest technologies and materials in energy-efficient design, clean energy technologies, smart home solutions, water conservation measures, electric vehicles, and high-performance buildings. During the final phase of the competition, the teams assemble their houses in an expo area, open them to the general public, while undergoing 10 different contests. The Solar Decathlon Middle East 2021 Competition was organized by DEWA, in line with EXPO 2020 Dubai.
Khalifa University have seted up a multidisciplinary team consisting of local and international students, academics and professional entities to participate in the SDME 2021 Competition. The KU team combined teams of students with faculty to develop a competitive design for the building through Senior Design Projects and research projects. The KU team was proud to have the cooperation and commitment of various engineering departments at KU:
The goal of the SDME Khalifa University team was the design and production of a new Emirati housing typology for the future. A typology which is sensitive to the UAE ecosystem and provides smart solutions to the regional climate and local weather. The house is autonomous from the grid systems, a ‘gatherer’ of renewable energy and a positive contributor to the future growth of the UAE’s urban fabric. The house is not developed solely as an aesthetically pleasing architectural design for implementation of high-end technological amenities, but also to ensure the happiness, comfort and safety of its inhabitants.
