What is Green Grants?

The Green Grants program was established to support members of the KU community in pursuing projects that improve the university’s operational environmental performance, foster environmental literacy and community engagement, advance applied research and design, expand sustainability learning opportunities, and demonstrate the viability of best practices and technologies for sustainability. Will be an Open Innovation Initiative which will be open for external collaboration.

Green Macro grants and Micro grants are intended to support projects and programs that have the potential for:

  • Offer turnkey solutions.
  • Can be implemented on the KU campus or within the UAE ecosystem.
  • Are senior design projects.

Micro grants (under AED 50,000) Micro grants of up to AED 50,000 are to support programs and projects that directly improve sustainability at KU campus (including senior design projects). Applications will be reviewed by the Sustainability Taskforce. Microgrants may be used to pilot an idea, which can later be developed into a full Green Grant. It will be accepted in rolling basis.

Macro grants (more than AED 50,000 and under AED 200k) Macro grants Program awards up to AED 200K for the most feasible, impactful, and innovative projects that have potential for institutionalization or are self-sustaining within KU campus or Abu Dhabi emirate . Applications will be reviewed by the Sustainability Taskforce and will be accepted on a yearly basis.

 

Eligibility

Green Grant projects should comply to the below:

  • Project timeline should be of one-year duration (project with potential impacts may have an extension for another year max).
  • Applied projects that address sustainable challenges either on KU campus or within the Abu Dhabi emirate. Can be one or more of the below:
    • Operations: Projects that pilot innovative ways to improve the material, physical, or infrastructural elements at KU campus or within Abu Dhabi region.
    • Engagement: Projects that foster a campus culture of sustainability within KU Campus or within Abu Dhabi region.
    • Research and Design: Projects that can be integrated within the university campus or community through use of KU as a testbed for data collection, or by producing deliverables with potential to catalyze operational, academic or cultural change at KU.
    • Academic: Projects that improve KU’s capacity for educating about sustainability, including curricular initiatives.
  • Projects should offer a direct and measurable impact.
  • Should have a designated owner and stakeholder who will be responsible for implementing the project upon its completion.
