Overview
The proposed PhD program in Public Health is under review by the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA).
The PhD in Public Health builds on Khalifa University’s internationally leading research activity in science, engineering, and medicine. It supports the University’s alignment with the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030 plan, particularly the Healthcare Equipment and Services and Education sectors, by offering premium education to nurture skilled knowledge workers in the field of public health. The PhD in Public Health program is awarded for successfully completing the requirements of the program, which include courses taught and research activities. Candidates for this degree are taught by experienced faculty and are expected to demonstrate initiative in their approach and innovation in their work.
OBJECTIVES AND LEARNING OUTCOMES
Program Educational Objectives
The Program Educational Objectives for the PhD in Public Health are:
- To graduate Public Health specialists with advanced training who can lead independent research and promote rigorous practice.
- To strengthen public health research and support research collaborations and partnerships at Khalifa University and beyond to improve data systems and address emerging public health issues in the UAE.
- To develop scholarly inquiry that addresses current public health issues in the UAE.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the PhD in Public Health, a graduate will be able to:
- Design public health studies using advanced methods to evaluate population health issues, investigate etiologic and preventive relations, predict health outcomes, provide input for program evaluation, and advance the knowledge base.
- Evaluate public and population health needs and conduct independent, original research that addresses a gap in the scientific literature and/or need in society.
- Develop communication that incorporates the critical importance of evidence in advancing public health knowledge in a manner appropriate to researchers, businesses, governments, communities, and other stakeholders.
- Plan studies that demonstrate adherence to research principles, integrity, and ethical standards in human research.

Candidates with a Master’s DegreeÂ
The PhD in Public Health consists of a minimum 60 credit hours, distributed as follows: 18 credit hours of core courses, 6 credit hours of elective courses, and 36 credit hours of PhD Dissertation. The components of the program are summarized in the table below:

Students with only a Bachelor’s degree must enroll on full-time basis. The PhD in Public Health consists of a minimum 72 credit hours, distributed as follows: 30 credit hours of core courses, 6 credit hours of elective courses, and 36 credit hours of PhD Dissertation.
